About SGI
2010 produced some of the darkest days that U.S. real estate had ever seen. Like most everyone else, I watched over 60% of my home’s value disappear and I was pretty sure that it was gone for good. To say that real estate was already on my mind would be an understatement.
Then, it happened.
In early July, two very close friends broke the news to me-- on the same day-- that they were losing their homes. These were real-life people that were real-life friends, and I knew they wanted help. My problem was that I didn’t know how.
I spent the next few weeks quizzing everyone I came into contact with about their experience in the current market. The results were overwhelming-- just about everyone was in the middle of their own real estate meltdown.
This wasn’t one of those national issues that you saw on the news. It was local. Very local. Like next door, across the street, and everywhere you looked and everyone you spoke with. Not only were there a boatload of new “circumstantial renters”, there was also a massive number of homeowners that were “accidental landlords” who couldn't sell their underwater properties but had to move.
To me, this meant there were a whole bunch of people that needed a hand.
They didn’t want an expert or a guru (which was convenient because I was neither), they just wanted help.
I combed through the thoughts, feelings, and emotions of everyone I spoke with, and eventually I saw how I could help: property management and real estate brokerage. These “renters” didn’t want to be renters forever, and these “landlords” didn’t want to be landlords forever. Then, in the middle of one of the worst real estate markets the country had seen, we thought it would be a good idea to open up a real estate company. (Of course, we were crazy. But it was a "good crazy".)
